Google Project Suncatcher prototype returns its first AI response from orbit
Google Research says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite—with a data-center-class TPU running Gemma 4—hit a Hello World milestone: the first AI response downlinked from orbit.
On 30 October 2026, Google Research reported that the Project Suncatcher prototype satellite launched on 1 October finished commissioning and reached a Hello World milestone: the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit.
During a ground-station pass, the team uplinked a prompt to the onboard Gemma 4 open model; as the satellite passed Svalbard, Norway, it downlinked a space-themed haiku, then further limerick and telemetry tests. Next steps are thermal-stress and radiation evaluations, toward twin interconnected satellites in 2027.
This is a verifiable in-orbit compute milestone for Google’s space AI-infrastructure moonshot.
